Elizabeth Kathleen Burgess, 102, of Capac, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 18, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, eleven days before her 103rd birthday.

She was born in East Detroit, June 29, 1921, the daughter of the late Richard and Kathleen (Wheeler) Hesketh.

Her marriage to Rev. Eugene Gerald Burgess was July 12, 1941, in Deckerville. They spent 62 loving years together before Rev. Eugene passed away on September 14, 2003.

Betty was a 1939 graduate from Almont High School. Betty traveled Michigan with her husband Eugene serving in church pastorates in Corunna, Laural, Columbus, South Haven, Ganges, and Lansing. In 1963, Eugene and Betty moved to Capac and Betty started working as a secretary for Vlasics in Imlay City, MI where she retired from many years later. Capac was Betty’s home until 2021, when it was determined that she could no longer live on her own at the age of 100. She moved to live with her son, David and his wife, MaryJune, where she remained until her transition to Glory. During her last few weeks she constantly stated she wanted to “Go Home.” While in Capac and Grand Rapids, Elizabeth was a testimony of her faith in Jesus Christ in spoken word and in her faithful presence at church and Bible study. Whenever she was asked how she had managed to live so long, her answers always was “It wasn’t me, it was Him. God has done it all.” Betty was a member of First Baptist Church of Capac and the Capac Senior Center.

Surviving are three sons, Kenneth Burgess of Novi, David (Mary June) Burgess of Grand Rapids and Ronald Burgess of College Station, TX and a daughter, Kathleen Burgess of Troy; nine grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and friends.

She is preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy VanDoeselaar and Gladys Deason; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Burgess.

The family honored the memory of Elizabeth Sunday, June 23, 2024, at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Capac.
