IMLAY CITY — A three vehicle crash Friday afternoon sent one person to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Traffic backed up quickly on southbound M-53, at the intersection of E. Third St. following the violent collision.

The incident happened in front of the police department shortly after noon.

Imlay City police and Lapeer County EMS crews worked to free the victim from a passenger vehicle, prior to the fire department arriving on scene.

According to police, the passenger vehicle was in the left turn lane, attempting to make a left turn onto E. Third St., while traveling north on M-53.

The back of the vehicle was struck by a northbound garbage truck, pushing it into the path of a southbound pickup truck.

The car was struckby the pickup, crushing the vehicle broadside on the passenger side of the vehicle.

After being extricated from the wreckage, Lapeer County EMS transported the driver of the car to McLaren Lapeer Regional for treatment of serious internal injuries.

The driver of the pick-up truck sustained injuries and was also treated. Two occupants in garbage truck were not injured.

Two of the vehicles sustained heavy damage in the crash that remains under investigation.
