ALMONT TWP. — A 67-year old Almont man is one of two people that passed away as a result of head-on crash in Almont Township Thursday evening.

This is at least the second fatal car crash in Almont Twp. in the past several weeks. Both fatal accidents took place south of Almont, near the Lapeer – Macomb county line.

According to the Almont police department, the fatal crash occurred just before 7 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Hough Road and M-53, closing the main highway for several hours for investigation and clean-up.

Almont Police Chief Andrew Martin said the Almont police department was notified at 6:52pm of a two-vehicle accident with two fatalities.

The accident occurred on Van Dyke Rd. near Hough Rd. in Almont Township, south of the village.

According to investigators, a Dodge Ram pickup was driving north on Van Dyke Rd. by a 67-year old Almont man. Police say the truck crossed the centerline and struck a southbound Chevy Tahoe driven by a 91 year old Rochester man.

Chief Martin said both drivers were deceased at the scene, and were the only occupants in the vehicles. Neither speed or alcohol appear to be a factor.

Almont police were assisted by multiple agencies at the scene including Almont Fire & Rescue, Lapeer County EMS, Lapeer County Central Dispatch, the Michigan State Police, Lapeer County Sheriff’s Department’s Crash Reconstruction Team, Dryden Twp. police department, Metamora Twp. police along with the Medical Examiner’s Office and Victims Service Unit.

Police have not released the names of the victims during the on-going investigation nor have they stated what caused the Almont man to cross the center-line.
