Dr. Robert Edward Lane, a dedicated physician who served the community of Almont, MI, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2024, at the age of 93. On August 24, 1930, Dr. Lane, was born in Pittsburgh, PA.

He dropped out of high school at the age of 16, in order to work full-time in a local steel mill to help support his family. After several years of working in the steel mill, he obtained his GED and attended the University of Pittsburgh for undergraduate studies and graduated from the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine, earning his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in 1959. He further earned his Certification in Internal Medicine from the American Osteopathic Association Board of Internal Medicine.

In 1962, Dr. Lane purchased the medical practice of Dr. Paul Swayze, in Almont, and established the Lane-Swayze Clinic, P.C. He dedicated his life to the medical profession, becoming the sole doctor in Almont for over six decades and touching the lives of countless individuals as a primary care physician.

Dr. Lane was a beloved husband to his late wife, Gertrude Lane, and later remarried to Stella Mangliers, who survives him. He was the proud father of two surviving children, Trudie (Kurt) and Robert (Michelle), and cherished by his eight grandchildren, Vito, Steven (Melissa), Bobby, Michael (Stephanie), Jason (Samantha), Joseph (Sarah), Jarod, and Christopher. His daughters, Victoria, Sylvia (Steve), and Kathy, all predeceased him. Dr. Lane is also survived by nephews, nieces, and cousins.

In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Lane was known for his adventurous spirit. He was a recreational pilot who owned and flew his own plane, finding solace and joy in the open skies. A former boxer, Dr. Lane valued physical fitness and made it a priority throughout his life.

Dr. Lane leaves behind a legacy of compassion, dedication, and service to his community. His impact as the only doctor in Almont spanned generations, delivering hundreds of babies, and caring for thousands of patients.

His memory will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and the community he served with unwavering commitment.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 16, 2024, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Muir Brothers Funeral Home, 138 S. Main St., Almont, MI 48003.
