Dear Editor,

Watching the Crumbley’s family school shooting trials unfold brings to mind an old adage “We all must suffer one of two pains; the pain of discipline or the pain of regret.” Today it seems some parents just have children while other parents raise their children.

When we made poor choices growing up on our farm, my dad had no qualms administering a little corporal punishment to me or my three brothers. We always received our counseling on the back porch. My dad would keep us waiting there for half an hour just looking at the strap hanging on the wall and contemplating our shortcomings. He always started out with “this hurts me more than it will hurt you.” I am proud to say I never received counseling twice for the same bad choice.

Looking back, I think I would much prefer the sting of a little corporal punishment administered by my father than the pain of neglect from my parents.
