Passenger vehicle pulls in to path of semi-truck

ALMONT TWP. — Emergency crews were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash on M-53 near the intersection of Bordman Rd shortly after noon Monday.

According to the Almont Police Department, officers responded shortly after 1 p.m. to the intersection of Van Dyke and Bordman Rd. for a two vehicle personal injury accident with entrapment

Officer Larry and Sgt. Repshas arrived on location and began rendering medical assistance. The crash involved two motor vehicles, a 2019 Jeep Compass and a 2019 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer.

Investigators say the Compass was driven by a 73-year old male from Bruce Twp. The Freightliner was driven by a 28-year old male from Washington.

Emergency vehicles block the scene of a multi-vehicle accident on M-53, near the Bordman intersection Monday afternoon. The driver of the vehicle being loaded onto the tow truck did not survive the crash.

The initial investigation as well as witness statements show that the Compass was stopped at the stop sign on westbound Bordman Rd. at the Van Dyke Rd. intersection.

The accident took place just north of the old Almont Hospital.

According to police, the Compass appeared to have pulled out onto Van Dyke Rd. and was attempting to make a left hand turn onto southbound Van Dyke Rd. when it pulled in front of the northbound tractor trailer.

The driver of the Compass was trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated by fire department personnel.

Bruce-Romeo Fire Department personnel transported the male from the scene to Troy Beaumont Hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained.

Investigators say the driver of the passenger vehicle passed away at the hospital, a short time after arriving at the hospital’s trauma center.

The incident remains under investigation. Police say alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The collision caused M-53 to be snarled to traffic in both directions of VanDyke Road as the victim was treated, the scene investigated and cleaned up.

Southbound traffic on M-53 was able to navigate around the crash scene, using the shoulder of the road and an old paved by-pass while northbound traffic was taking Bordman Rd. to Kidder and then back to M-53.

The Almont Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Almont Fire Department, Bruce-Romeo Fire Department, Lapeer County EMS, Lapeer County Central Dispatch, and the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Department.
