James Franklin Whitkopf, 75, of Metamora formerly of Imlay City, died Sunday July 30, 2023. He was born August 5, 1947, in Almont to parents Fredrick and Myrtle (Besey) Whitkopf. Jim married Diana L. Sharp on August 13, 1994, in Metamora.
Mr. Whitkopf proudly served his country in the United States Army, drafted during the Vietnam War. Jim was an old school, nose-to-grindstone worker. His family knew him to work twelve hour days, generally seven days a week-until his last year when he cut down to eight hour shifts. Jim worked as a millwright; 34 1/2 years for General Motors, then 17 years for Chrysler. The family says he did generally mow the lawn but ‘don’t ever touch his tractor.’ His daughters would try to have him watch movies or a little tv, but he often fell asleep, because he worked so much. They will certainly miss him.
He is survived by wife of nearly 29 years, Diana; daughters, Samantha Whitkopf and Michaela Whitkopf; niece, Beth Whitkopf; as well as many cousins.
Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Whitkopf and his aforementioned parents.
A memorial gathering to celebrate Jim’s life will take place 3-6 p.m. Sunday, September 10, 2023, at Stevo’s Bar & Grill, 596 S. Cedar St., Imlay City, MI 48444. Mr. Whitkopf’s cremation has been entrusted with Muir Brothers Funeral Home Lapeer, 1021 S. Lapeer Road, Lapeer, MI 48446. Phone 810-664-8111.
