Mary Alice Irish, age 90, of Attica, MI died Saturday, August 19, 2023, at McLaren Lapeer Region Hospital of Lapeer, MI. Mary Alice Penzien was born October 22, 1932, in Lapeer, MI. She is the daughter of the late Harry and the late Alta Mae (Hoisington) Penzien, Sr. She lived most of her life in the Attica area. Mary was a graduate of Imlay City High School, Class of 1950.
Mary Alice married Richard ‘Dick’ Irish on June 7, 1952, in Attica, MI. Dick passed away January 10, 2016. She was an Executive Legal Secretary for 30+ years. Mary started with Clayton Preisel, Attorney-at-Law; and followed Judge Clayton Preisel to the Probate Court bench to become the Lapeer County Probate Court Registrar. Mary Alice was a cheerleader in high school and continued to cheer for the rest of her life for the Michigan State University Spartans football team. She and Dick enjoyed traveling the country in their motorhome. She loved her English springer spaniels; and puzzles (i.e., jigsaw puzzles), Sudoku, electronic handheld games, and knitting.
She is survived by: her daughters, Cathleen Irish of Davison, MI and Kay (Robert) Hennes of Fifield, WI; her brother, Harry Penzien, Jr. of Attica, MI; brother-in-law, Bob (Margaret Merwin) Irish of Attica, MI. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Erin (Sean Lane) Hennes and Sarah (Christopher) Kerber; great-grandchildren, Caitlin Kerber and Camden Kerber.
Mary Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Irish; sister, Joan (Don) Phillips; her brother-in-law, Fred (Joyce) Irish; and sister-in-law, June Penzien.
The funeral services were held 1 p.m., Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at Muir Brothers Funeral Home of Imlay City, 225 N. Main Street, Imlay City, MI. Reverend Dr. Marcel Lamb, pastor of the Amazing Grace Methodist Church, officiated. Burial followed in Attica Township Cemetery.
