Dear Editor,

Americans have loved and valued our horses for centuries and we believe it is our responsibility to protect them. The Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act (H.R. 3475/S. 2037) will provide the protections that horses need and deserve by eliminating the horse slaughter pipeline that currently funnels thousands of American equines across our borders for slaughter for human consumption each year. This crucial legislation has gained significant support from the American public, with a staggering 83 percent of voters opposing the slaughter of horses for human consumption.

The SAFE Act will permanently ban this cruel practice in the U.S. and prevent the export of horses to slaughter. Public opinion is clear: the slaughter of horses for human consumption is unacceptable and goes against our societal values. Since our nation’s beginning, horses have held a special place in American culture, symbolizing strength, grace, and companionship. They have tirelessly served our nation. It is our duty to protect these magnificent creatures from the horrors of slaughter.

By including this legislation in the 2023 Farm Bill, we can represent the interests and concerns of the American people and send a powerful message to the world about our respect for the human-horse bond.

I urge Senator Stabenow to consider the overwhelming public sentiment and take action to safeguard the welfare of horses by supporting the inclusion of the SAFE Act in the 2023 Farm Bill. Horses have had a profound impact on our country, but preserving their legacy isn’t just about our history; it’s about honoring the bond we’ve forged with these remarkable animals and ensuring their protection for generations to come.

Thank you!
