Medical condition prompts driver
to swerve onto sidewalk, hit building

IMLAY CITY — A freak accident claimed the life of a pedestrian walking along southbound Almont Avenue near the railroad tracks on Wednesday afternoon.

Police Chief Brett Selby says police were called to the scene around 12:30 p.m. Selby says a preliminary investigation indicates that a husband and wife were traveling southbound in a white pickup truck with the husband at the wheel. The husband experienced a medical condition and the vehicle swerved to the right off of S. Almont Ave. and struck the pedistrian who was walking on the sidewalk. The vehicle continued across the sidewalk and struck the building located at 150 S. Almont Avenue.

The pedestrian was killed, and the driver and his passenger were both transported to McLaren Lapeer Region.

“This is a tragic event for all involved,” Selby says. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the families.”

Selby says the incident was broadcast on Nixle, and further updates will be posted as they become available. Residents can sign up for Nixle notifications by texting their zipcode to 888777 from a mobile phone or online at imlaycity.org via the Nixle widget.

Selby says the crash remains under investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Department, which has a team of expert investigators and the equipment to fully examine the crash scene.
