Hilda York, age 94, of Cedar (recently of Imlay City), MI, died Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at McLaren Lapeer Region Hospital of Lapeer, MI. Hilda Tonello was born March 4, 1928 in Clifton, NJ. She was the daughter of the late Emilio and the late Marcellina (Tonon) Tonello. Hilda, along with her family, moved to Detroit, MI when she was 11 years old. She was a graduate of East Michigan High School in Detroit, MI, Class of 1946. She married John York on May 29, 1948 in Detroit, MI. Hilda lived in Cedar (near Traverse City), MI for 48-plus years before moving to Imlay City three years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, on October 25, 1997.

She owned and operated Evergreen Custom Drapery in Cedar, MI for 45 years. Hilda was an excellent seamstress. Before living in Cedar, she was a bookkeeper for her husband at York Lift Truck Service in Warren, MI.

Hilda was a very active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Suttons Bay, MI. She was an amazing cook and always had a full social calendar. She enjoyed making quilts, gardening, and belonged to a book club. Hilda liked to play mahjong, pinochle, rummy, and piecing puzzles together.

She is survived by her children, Christine (Stuart) Tipping of Marshfield, WI, Leta (George) Culver of Imlay City, MI, John (Judy) York of Bear Lake, MI and Jan (Jody) Prause of Wyoming, MI; sister, Emma Geraldine “Gerre” (Norman) Rosinski; her grandchildren, Michael Tipping, Matthew Tipping, Brianna Tipping, Kristin Tipping, Lea Sidibe, Jacob Regas, Kara Regas, Joshua Culver, Aaron York, Ian York, Isaac York, Zachary Prause, and Ezekiel Prause; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Predeceased by her husband, John York; daughter, Laura (Nick) Regas; her grandson, George Culver; and brother, Anthony Tonello.

The funeral was held Saturday, November 12, 2022 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 200 N. Cedar St., Imlay City, MI. Pastor Alan Casillas, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, officiated.
