Every spring, we’re pleased to help local school districts celebrate their graduates and that includes Lapeer County Adult Education program. These are local adults who go back to school later in life to complete their high school education and obtain a diploma.
Registration for GED classes and testing offered by the Lapeer County Intermediate School District is going on now. They offer year round evening and daytime classes at the Lapeer County Ed Tech Center in Attica, plus online instruction too. All classes are free and vouchers will be given to help students pay for their GED tests.
The program’s tagline pretty much says it all, “It’s never too late to graduate!” According to the ISD, someone with a high school diploma earns an average of $8,000 more per year than someone without one. Local statistics show that 11 percent of Lapeer County residents older than 25 didn’t complete their high school education.
Other than the obvious implications that statistic has on the individual it can certainly extend to the local economy too. Workers with less than a high school diploma are more likely to be unemployed than those with a diploma and those with some college or an associate’s degree. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 5.6 percent of those without a high school diploma were without a job in July 2022 while that number was 3.6 percent for high school grads and 3 percent for those with some college classes under their belt.
According to the National Dropout Prevention Center, the U.S. loses a significant amount of money in lost earnings and unrealized tax revenues when teens aren’t able to complete their schooling.
