Elizabeth “Betty” Groenewoud, age 86, recently of Yale (formerly of Dryden), MI passed away Monday, November 22, 2021, surrounded by her loving family at MediLodge of Yale, MI. Elizabeth Ann Woods was born September 2, 1935 in Detroit, MI. She was the daughter of the late Carl and the late Gladys (Shenk) Woods. Betty grew up in Romeo, MI. She was a graduate of Romeo High School. Betty married Neil Groenewoud on August 7, 1954 in Imlay City, MI.

She was mostly a homemaker, raising her family and also worked as a secretary for the family business, Wood Septic Tank Service in Romeo, MI.

As a young lady, Betty worked at the Romeo Theater. Betty played guitar. She played country and western and folk music. Betty even tried out for the Ted Mack Musical Amateur Hour. She would go up to Black Lake, MI with her children to visit her parents.

Betty was a member of the Romeo V.F.W. Women’s Auxiliary and a former member of Washington Lutheran Church.

She loved her Boston bull terriers and collected statues of them. Betty was an avid coin and spoon collector. She loved to be outdoors, especially fishing (any kind), smelt dipping, mushroom picking and gardening (especially asparagus). Betty enjoyed traveling and liked to go up north to their place in Evart, MI. She enjoyed bowling on a league at Summit Entertainment Center (formerly Bowerman’s Peach Pit Bowling Alley) in Romeo, MI

Betty is survived by her daughters, Janice (Chris) Kersey of Utica, MI, Denise (Andy) Walker of Brockway, MI, Debbie (John) Sach of Columbia, SC and Kathy Krotzer of Bay City, MI; and her sons, Keith (Toni) Groenewoud of Utica, MI and Mike (Jodie) Groenewoud of Muskegon, MI. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; her sister, June Hostetler of Attica, MI; brother, Richard (Judy) Woods of Onaway, MI; and her brother-in-law, Jack Whitehouse.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil Groenewoud; her parents, Carl and Gladys Woods; and her sister, Evelyn Whitehouse.

The funeral service was held Monday, November 29, 2021 at Crossroads Baptist Church, 6835 Weyer Road, Imlay City, MI. Pastor Jeff DuFour, pastor of Crossroads Baptist Church, officiated. Interment followed at Attica Township Cemetery.
