Bernice Aikman, age 97, of Imlay City (recently of Lapeer), MI passed away Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Lapeer County Medical Care Facility (Suncrest) of Lapeer, MI. Bernice Audrey Harris was born February 28, 1924 in Detroit, MI. She was the daughter of the late Theodore Howick and the late Lillian Marie (Pagel) Harris. She grew up in Detroit and right out of high school, she took a job as an elevator operator at Hudson’s Department Store in Detroit. She married Eugene Francis Aikman on November 30, 1946 in Detroit, MI. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, on January 17, 1991.
Bernice worked as a social worker at Suncrest – Lapeer County Medical Care Facility for 17 years. She retired in 1988. She had also worked as a nurse’s aide at the Lane-Swayze Clinic in Almont; and at Saratoga Hospital in Detroit before she married Gene. Bernice was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Imlay City for many years; she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She loved decorating her home for the holidays and spending Christmas Eve with all of her family. She enjoyed summers in the pool, flower gardening, golfing, reading, cooking and camping.
Bernice is survived by her children, David (Bonnie) Aikman of Attica, MI, Colleen (Vincent) Roszczewski of Imlay City, MI, Rhenee (Charles) Roszczewski of Lapeer, MI, Jeffery Aikman of Imlay City, MI; and a sister, Marjorie Wolber of Dearborn, MI. Also surviving are her grandchildren, David Aikman, Holly (Phillip) Warner, Vinny Roszczewski, Matthew (Amanda) Roszczewski, Rachel (Steve) Rago, Jacob (Tiffany) Roszczewski, Anthony (Jamie) Roszczewski, Amber (Brian) Kintigh; fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene “Gene” Aikman; her sister, Doris Carney; and a great-grandson, David Ezekiel Warner.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at Muir Brothers Funeral Home of Imlay City, 225 N. Main Street, Imlay City, MI. The Reverend Alan Casillas, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, will be officiating. Burial will follow in Attica Township Cemetery. The family will be available for visiting hours from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, November 17 at Muir Brothers Funeral Home of Imlay City, 225 N. Main Street, Imlay City, MI.
