ALMONT — Almont kicked off their 2021 season with a 25-0 loss to host Monroe St. Mary Central in a non-league varsity football contest last Thursday night.

In Thursday’s contest, Almont spotted Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central a 6-0 edge after one quarter was complete.

Quarter two saw Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central add 13 points and Almont tallied none, leaving them up 19-0 at the halftime break.

That was followed by a scoreless third quarter.

Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central then outscored Almont 6-0 from that point on, good for a 25-0 win.

Brock Conger completed four of six pass plays for 45 yards as Almont’s quarterback that evening He threw zero interceptions along the way.

Matthew Measel (two catches for 31 yards) and Mason Smith (two receptions for 14 yards) hauled in his accurate tosses.

The Almont ground game produced 59 yards on 16 totes.

Mason Smith (two rushes for 43 yards) supplied Almont’s top numbers. The remaining 14 Raider rushes gained a combined 16 yards.

Tyler Filinger and Brandon Hunsaker (three solos and 10 assists each) and Trenton Kruse (four solos and eight assists) proved Almont’s defensive standouts. Smith (two solos and six assists), Isaiah Bankston (eight assists) plus Antonio Nedelkovski and Bryce Ferman (five assists each) supported their performances.

Almont returns to action this Thursday when they travel to Yale for a Blue Water Area Conference clash. That matchup lists a 7 p.m. starting time.
