Organization eyes volunteers, donations for Sept. 30 event

 

LAPEER COUNTY — Lapeer County’s Neighbors Helping Neighbors and the United Way of Lapeer County are seeking donations and volunteers for their 2021 Community Outreach program on Thursday, Sept. 30.

The annual event takes place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Lapeer Center Building, and is dedicated to assisting county residents who are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless.

Community Outreach Coordinator Ron Belcher provided a “wish list” of some of the items and services most needed by struggling individuals and families.

They include baby care items, cases of bottled water, new hats, gloves, underwear and socks; gently-used winter clothing for both adults and children, boots, blankets, towels, wash cloths, can openers, tents and non-perishable food items.

If you wish to donate items, drop them off at the the New To You Consignment Store at 286 W. Nepessing St., or call 810-245-7272.

Those seeking assistance must preregister online at: homelessinlapeermi.com. or call Belcher at the aforementioned number.

Among the free services and items available to those in need are housing assistance, utility assistance, counseling, blood pressure checks, personal care items, haircuts, employment opportunities, job training, disabilities assistance and COVID-19 vaccinations.

Free food items will be provided by the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.

The Lapeer Center Building is located at 425 County Center St. in Lapeer.
