IMLAY CITY — A 60-year-old Imlay City man riding a motorcycle was killed at around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, (July 30), when struck by a GMC Yukon at the intersection of Almont Avenue and Titus Street.
Interim Police Chief Sean Leathers reported that the victim, Chauncey David Hurt, was traveling southbound and just a few houses from his own driveway when the accident occurred.
Leathers said the driver of the Yukon was turning west onto Titus and failed to yield the right of way.
Leathers said the tragedy was particularly difficult for responding officers and EMS personnel, many of whom knew the victim.
“Everyone knew and liked Chauncey,” Leathers said. “It was a terrible tragedy and ordeal for everyone involved.”
He said both Almont Avenue and Titus Street were closed to traffic for about four hours.
In addition to Imlay City police and Lapeer County EMS personnel, Lapeer County Sheriff’s Dept. investigators were on hand to reconstruct the accident scene.
Leathers added that the incident remains under investation.
