ALMONT — Almont advanced two of their wrestlers to the Division 3 individual state finals scheduled for March 6-7 at Ford Field in Detroit.
They qualified with top-four weight class finishes at a regional hosted by Yale High School last Saturday.
Dallas Stanton led Almont that day. Stanton reached the title match at 103 pounds where he pinned Saginaw Swan Valley’s Tyler Ueberroth with 4:22 gone.
Mathew Dwyer was the other Almont grapper who will be heading to the upcoming state finals, thanks to a third. Dwyer closed out a successful day at 140 pounds with a pin over Lakeville’s Cal Huggler with 1:29 gone.
Capac’s Max Frangedakis (103), Derek Mason (130), Hunter Tyson (145) and Bryce Tank (189) plus Almont’s Aiden Finn (125) nearly joined them as state qualifiers. Each went 1-2 for the day, just a win away from becoming a state qualifier.
Almont’s Lane Jackson rounded out the list of Tri-City grapplers who competed at regionals. Jackson dropped both of his bouts pitted against 160-pound counterparts.
