While it’s hard to believe area youths will head back to the classrooms in just a few weeks, it is a reality around the Tri-City area.
That means helping students be prepared for the new school year with adequate school supplies.
Blue Water Community Action, a nonprofit, public organization with 50 years under its belt, is offering a boost to all low income St. Clair County residents with the 17th annual Back to School 2019 Backpack Giveaway. The backpacks and supplies are provided through donations, both financial and supplies. Blue Water Community Action volunteers fill the backpacks and send them to the giveaway locations.
Capac residents can line up with their kids on Friday, August 16 at Capac Elementary School, 351 W. Kempf Court. The McLaren Port Huron Foundation is organizing the event. Children must be present to receive a backpack, and they’ll be allowed to choose their own in the appropriate age category. Proof of residency in St. Clair County is also required.
Backpacks are filled with basic supplies, and are sorted to accommodate preschool, elementary and middle school students.
Preschoolers will find crayons, a reading book and an activity book in theirs.
Elementary school backpacks contain a ruler, scissors, crayons, pencils and a pencil sharpener, pocket folders, lined paper, a glue stick, spiral notebook and markers.
For middle schoolers, backpacks include pocket folders, pencils and a pencil pouch, colored pencils, lined paper, highlighters, pens, index cards and a notebook.
There is a limited quantity of backpacks, and they will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.
In the past, hundreds of Capac youths have participated in—and benefited from the Back to School Backpack Giveaways. We applaud Blue Water Community Action, the McLaren Port Huron Foundation, and all of the donors and volunteers who continue to help area students succeed.
